Bad Gastein is a mountain spa town in the Gastein Valley of Salzburg province, set at about 1,000 meters above sea level within the Hohe Tauern region. The town is built on steep slopes around the Gasteiner Ache, with historic buildings rising above the valley and mountains surrounding the settlement. Its most distinctive feature is the Gastein Waterfall, which drops through the center of town in three stages. Bad Gastein is also known for its Belle Époque architecture, alpine landscape, and long association with thermal water and spa treatments.

The town's identity has been shaped by its role as a spa destination and by the grand hotels and villas built around the historic center. The Belle Époque buildings give Bad Gastein a distinctive architectural character, with promenades and streets following the steep terrain. Thermal springs remain central to local culture, with Gastein thermal water emerging from numerous natural springs in the valley. The town also has connections with Austrian artistic and literary life, while traditional alpine customs, mountain farming, and hospitality remain part of the wider Gastein Valley.

Bad Gastein's waterfall is one of its defining landmarks, with the Gasteiner Ache descending 341 meters through the town in three sections. The Felsentherme spa is built directly into the mountainside and uses naturally heated Gastein thermal water in its pools and bathing facilities. Above the town, Stubnerkogel provides access to hiking routes, mountain viewpoints, and a suspension bridge, while Graukogel is known for its stone pine forests and alpine trails. The surrounding Hohe Tauern landscape offers opportunities for hiking, skiing, snowshoeing, and exploring mountain lakes and valleys.

Food in Bad Gastein reflects the culinary traditions of Salzburg and the wider Austrian Alps. Local restaurants and mountain huts serve dishes such as Kasnocken, a regional style of cheese noodles, hearty soups, dumplings, schnitzel, and pastries including Kaiserschmarrn. Dairy products, potatoes, herbs, and locally produced meats feature prominently in alpine cooking. The town's spa heritage is another distinctive detail: Gastein's thermal water is naturally warm and contains minerals and a mild concentration of radon. This combination of historic spa architecture, thermal springs, and steep mountain terrain gives Bad Gastein its particular character.
